Rehoming Your Pet

Placing Your Pet for Rehoming

Deciding to place your pet for rehoming isn’t easy. If you are considering rehoming your pet due to financial challenges, need for food or supplies, difficulty providing veterinary care, or deployment, we may be able to help through our Pet Care Resources. Portsmouth Humane accepts pets for rehoming from Portsmouth residents by appointment, but we recommend rehoming your pet on your own if possible. Shelters are stressful and scary for pets, and your companion will be happier transitioning directly from your home to a new family. Rehoming your pet may seem daunting, but our Rehoming Guide makes it easy! We are happy to provide help and guidance along the way.

Before you bring your pet to the shelter, we encourage you to try rehoming your pet yourself! There are many free tools available to you, including Rehome by Adopt a Pet! Get your pet signed up today, and their Adoption Profile will appear right alongside the Portsmouth Humane adoptable animals’ listing.

If you need to re-home your pet urgently, review our Rehoming with PHS Guide and contact us at 757-397-6004 to set an appointment. Appointment wait times may be a few days or up to two weeks depending on the number of animals in our care. A donation is requested for the housing, feeding and veterinary care of surrendered pets. Please ask about emergency appointments or fee waivers if needed.

Proof of Portsmouth residency is required. We cannot place exotic animals or livestock but can provide rehoming guidance.
