Lost and Found Animals

Whether you’ve lost or found a pet, you’re probably feeling confused or worried about what to do next. Chances are, the pet is too! Follow the steps below for the best chance at a safe reunion.

If you have FOUND a pet:

Begin by completing a FOUND PET REPORT. Legally, found pets must be reported to the City in which they were found.  Your report will even allow folks who have lost a pet to search easily online! After you complete a report, a volunteer will get in touch to support you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

If you feel comfortable doing so, you may choose to keep the pet in your home and search for an owner by contacting neighbors, posting online, distributing fliers, and more. Pets found in the City of Portsmouth can be brought to Portsmouth Humane Society each day from 8 am to 5 pm. Please note that healthy found or trapped cats without identification should not be brought to a shelter or relocated for their own safety. For more information, click here!

For found pets that need emergency medical care or that are too aggressive to safely catch, call the Portsmouth Police Non-Emergency Number at 757-393-5300.

Be sure to check the listing of lost pets below for pets similar to the one you’ve found!

If you have LOST a pet:

First, fill out a LOST PET REPORT. This report tells our shelter and community members who to contact if your pet is found! After you complete a report, a volunteer will get in touch to support you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

Plan to come by Portsmouth Humane Society to look for your pet in person as soon as possible. Found pets can be viewed from 8 am to 5 pm daily. All pets brought to our shelter as strays are given a general health exam and vaccines at intake to prevent the spread of illness. The cost of providing care, food, and shelter to your pet is covered with a reclaim fee.

There is no reclaim fee for pets returned to their home within 24 hours of intake.
$25.00 – First day
$10.00 – Each additional day
Any veterinary care provided by an animal hospital will be the pet owner’s responsibility upon redemption.

You can check the found pet listings below to see pets that were located by community members! The second set of listings shows found pets currently in our shelter. We recommend checking multiple shelters as pets may travel between cities!
